Tom Little to run for Morgan County Sheriff

Former Chief Deputy Tom Little

plans to run for Morgan sheriff post

A former chief deputy to the late Morgan County Sheriff Steve Crabbe said he has 32 years of law enforcement experience that qualifies him for the top job.

"I have the passion to serve, and the necessary leadership skills and abilities," Little said. "My desire is that people have easy access to the sheriff's office and leave having a positive experience.

Little served as Crabbe's chief deputy from 1991 to 2002 when the sheriff, a Republican, died. Little decided not to run for sheriff in 2002, but did run in 2006 in a close race losing to the current Sheriff Greg Bartlett.

In addition to experience as chief deputy, Little worked for the Alabama Alcohol Beverage Control Board. He operated an enforcement district for the agency in Birmingham.

Qualifications

He is a state-certified police officer and a graduate of the Huntsville Police Academy.

He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy and has a bachelor of science degree in criminal justice from the University of Montevallo. He has a law degree from the Birmingham School of Law. Little is among two people in Alabama to be named American Legion Law Enforcement Officer of the Year. He received the national honor in 2000.

Little served in the U.S. Air Force from 1966 to 1969.

He said his experience makes him an ideal candidate.

"I look forward to meeting and talking with the citizens of Morgan County, and I hope they will welcome the experience I can to bring to the sheriff's office," Little said. "I plan to run a good, clean race."

Sheriff Greg Bartlett, who won the 2002 general election as a Democrat, turned Republican later, saying that he no longer shared the same views as Democrats.

Sheriff Greg Bartlett pocketed some $316,000 over a five-year period of unspent food money for the Morgan County Jail. That was in addition to his $64,000 annual salary.

Federal judge arrests Morgan County sheriff over jail food.

DECATUR, Ala. (AP) - A federal judge has ordered the arrest of Morgan County Sheriff Greg Bartlett, who was held in contempt of court for failing to adequately feed jail inmates while profiting from the skimpy meals.
U.S. District Judge U.W. Clemon ordered marshals to take Bartlett into custody at the end of a hearing Wednesday in Decatur.
The sheriff had testified that he legally pocketed about $212,000 over three years with surplus meal money but denied that inmates were improperly fed.
Clemon, however, said the sheriff would be held until he comes up with a plan to provide the 300 jail inmates with nutrionally adequate meals, as required by an earlier court order.

Calhoun Community College Establishes Scholarship Fund

Calhoun Community College Establishes Scholarship Fund
in Memory of Elizabeth Cheatham

elizcheatCalhoun Community College today officially announced the establishment of a scholarship fund in memory of the late Elizabeth C. Cheatham, who taught computer information systems and office administration courses at the college. The announcement was made during a memorial service in her honor Friday at Calhoun’s Decatur campus, attended by over 200 college personnel, students and local residents.

Cheatham was a member of the Calhoun faculty for almost 25 years until her untimely death on Thursday, August 21, 2008, as the result of an aneurysm.  “Her love for her students, dedication to education and infectious smile had a positive impact on everyone she touched, so we felt it was befitting to establish this scholarship to honor her memory,” commented Calhoun President Marilyn Beck.

According to the Calhoun Foundation, once the scholarship fund has reached the $25,000 level, it will become a perpetual scholarship with the ability to provide annual scholarship funds to deserving students attending Calhoun.

Anyone interested in contributing to the scholarship should contact Jennie Walts in the Calhoun Foundation Office at 256/306-2579 or by email at jlw@calhoun.edu.  Checks may be sent directly to the Foundation and should be made payable to the Calhoun Foundation with the notation "For the Elizabeth Cheatham Scholarship"; mailing address P.O. Box 2216, Decatur, AL  35609.
